A strong earthquake shook the south of Alaska on Friday and caused buildings in the city of Anchorage to tremble. The US earthquake USGS gave the strength at 6.6, the US Weather Service said 7.0. The police spoke of significant damage to homes. there were no reports of injuries.

The authorities tentatively issued a tsunami warning for some parts of the south coast. Worries about it proved unfounded.

The quake occurred at 8.29 o’clock local time, according to the US earthquake USGS reports. The center of the earthquake was, according to the latest information from the experts about 13 kilometers north of Anchorage near a military base. It happened 40 kilometers deep. The authority also registered several aftershocks.

Many people had run into the open after the quake. In pictures were seen broken windows, fallen furniture and a sagging street. There were reports of power outages. An oil pipeline was shut down as a precaution.

The state governor, Bill Walker, issued a disaster announcement – a measure to help organize more quickly. He wrote on Twitter that he was in contact with the White House. US President Donald Trump was briefed on the situation in Alaska at the G20 summit in Argentina.

Police from Anchorage City said there was “significant infrastructure damage”. Many houses and buildings are damaged.

Former Governor and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin was also affected. Her family is fine, but her house is not intact, Palin wrote on Twitter. She was grateful that she was safe and prayed for the state.
