Tourist Arrested In Myanmar

A French tourist has been arrested for filming from a drone over Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw. The 27-year-old man from Clermont-Ferrand was remanded for flying the drone over the House of Representatives of the Southeast Asian state, as the French Embassy announced on Monday.

Because of similar allegations, three journalists have already been sentenced to two months in prison. In Myanmar (formerly Burma/Burma), it is illegal by law to film government buildings from the air.

Naypyidaw was made the capital and seat of government only in 2005, at that time in the days of military dictatorship. Many embassies are still in the old capital Yangon. In addition to huge buildings for the president, government and parliament, the new capital is also known for its extremely wide streets, where not too many cars are on the road.
