George H.W. Bush Funeral

In Washington, many people have said goodbye to the late former US President George HW Bush. The
coffin of the politician was transferred from Houston to the US capitol on Monday and laid there to begin the funeral ceremonies in the Capitol. US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania also came to the US flag-covered coffin and honored Bush.

Trump had the coffin picked up with the Air Force One presidential aircraft in Houston, Texas, where the 41st US President died last Friday at the age of 94. In Washington, 21 cannon shots were heard before a military honor guard carried the coffin into the rotunda of the Capitol.

Bush’s son, 43-year-old George W. Bush, and his wife Laura attended as well as other family members, dignitaries and more than 100 parliamentarians at a funeral ceremony in the Capitol, the seat of the US Congress.

In a speech, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell paid tribute to the late President as a patriot who led the country as securely as a World War II pilot. Bush has always encouraged Americans to be more ambitious and has always been “humble and friendly”.

For the White House, Vice President Mike Pence paid tribute to Bush’s services, which ruled from 1989 to 1993. “President Bush accompanied the collapse of the Soviet Union, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and under his leadership America won the Cold War,” Pence said. “When President George Herbert Walker left Bush, he left America and the world more peaceful, prosperous and secure.”

After the funeral, Trump came to the coffin together with First Lady Melania. The President saluted with his right hand and stood for about a minute at the coffin. Then the presidential couple left the Capitol.

Hundreds of people lined up in front of the imposing building to honor the president from 1989 to 1993. The public can say goodbye to Bush at the Capitol until Wednesday morning.

Then the coffin is taken to the Cathedral of Washington, where on Wednesday the national memorial service is held. For the day, the US authorities have ordered a one-day national mourning. Trump and his wife also want to attend the national memorial service. Dozens of heads of state and government from around the world are expected to attend, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Bush had made no secret of his aversion to Trump during his lifetime. In the 2016 presidential election, he did not vote for the right-wing populist who stood up for his Republican party. Trump, in turn, had criticized Bush in the election campaign.

On Monday, Trump honored the former president in a letter to members of Congress. Bush has given an example of his life, “which is truly great about America.” “President Bush has worked his long life selflessly to create a world of justice and lasting peace.”

On Thursday, George H.W Bush is buried in Houston alongside his wife Barbara, who died in April, and daughter Robin, who died of leukemia at the age of three.
